A massive thank you to everyone who worked hard in this year's local elections. Four years of Tory scandal and financial mismanagement
Over the last four years Conservative run Essex County Council has been hit by a series of financial and other scandals
- The former Leader, Lord Hanningfield, was forced to resign over his House of Lords expenses for which he was imprisoned
- Lord Hanningfield's ECC expenses were exposed which showed £287,000 had been spent over the five years 2005-10, the previous five years records having been destroyed
- Further revelations showed his office staff claimed £70,000 over three years and ECC paid his £4,600 bar bill at the House of Lords
- The Conservatives, with Labour support, refused a Liberal Democrat call for an Inquiry to establish who authorised those payments and why
- The use of 'P' cards (payment cards) by officers was exposed which revealed £1.7m had been spent on luxury hotels, trips abroad and shopping sprees
- Five cases of personal identity data were leaked or mislaid
- The revelation that ECC had £14.5m of art treasures hidden away from public view
- Developer contributions (Section 106 monies) were lost through inaction

Raising the tax-free allowance is the Liberal Democrats' flagship policy and has so far seen Income Tax bills slashed by £600 a year for millions of low and middle income workers compared to what they were paying under Labour. As a result, more than 2m people on low pay have been lifted out of paying Income Tax altogether.
The tax-free allowance will rise again next year to £10,000, fulfilling a commitment from the front page of the Liberal Democrats' 2010 General Election manifesto and resulting in a total tax cut of £700.
Commenting, Liberal Democrat Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Danny Alexander said:

"The saying goes that hard work pays off and there is no greater evidence of this than the Liberal Democrats in Brentwood. Not so long ago our Council group was a small, plucky, hard working bunch. But, though the bad times for our party locally, they stuck together and their work in the past has sown the seed for the growth of our party. In 12 months we have gained 3 more councillors, and with the 4 resignations from the administration our time is coming again. Don't think that we haven't noticed Tory majorities eroded. Don't think we're not in a position to take advantage.

In another astonishing election twist, a sitting Tory County Councillor has refused to answer a question from a resident, citing the fact that we are close to an election.
The resident asked several questions about services for autism and Asperger's to Cllr Ann Naylor, Brentwood Rural Councillor and a cabinet member for healthcare. The resident also asked her what she had done, in a personal capacity as councillor, for sufferers of these conditions. Cllr Naylor responded:
