Lib Dem leader slams MP's second home allowance

THE leader of the opposition in Brentwood has called on MP Eric Pickles to stop claiming a second home allowance.
Lib Dem leader David Kendall believes that the Brentwood and Ongar MP should not claim an allowance for a flat in Wapping as his Brentwood home is 37 miles from Westminster.
Mr Pickles claimed £91,501 between 2001 and 2007.
During an appearance on the BBC's Question Time last week, the 56-year-old MP was given a hostile response by the Newcastle audience when he defended his claim to a second home allowance.
Mr Kendall said: "I am sure many residents will be shocked and surprised to hear that Eric Pickles is claiming this second home allowance. He could easily drive to Shenfield and get a fast train to and from London like everyone else has to.
"Many residents have jobs that mean they have to leave home at 5.30am by various means of transport and often arrive back very late at night but they aren't offered any special allowance to compensate for the disruption to their lifestyle so why should he?"
Mr Pickles countered: "I purchased my London flat from my savings and income; I choose not to take the full amount allocated by Parliament. During the Parliamentary week and some other times I live in London.
"Most MPs of all political parties on the outer rim of the M25 have a London base. My arrangements are not unusual. Parliament operates long, erratic and unpredictable hours and as a serious MP I hope I am more effective by living close to Westminster.
"I believe it is time for MP's salaries and expenses to be taken away from Parliament and placed in the hands of an independent body free from government interference."
