Brentwood's new Liberal Democrat councillors celebrate after the results are announced

Cllr Barry Aspinell and Cllr David Kendall have both been elected as County Councillors, for Brentwood North and Brentwood South divisions respectively.

Cllr Aspinell polled 301 votes more than the Conservative candidate and Cllr Kendall ended a hard fought campaign with a seven vote majority. Nick Clegg MP, leader of the Liberal Democrats congratulated the two new county councillors on national television today.

Speaking after the count, Cty Cllr Aspinell said:

"I really wasn't expecting this result, but it just goes to prove what getting out and talking to residents about the issues that affect them can achieve. I started this campaign 700 votes behind and have finished over 300 ahead.

"It really is phenomenal".

Cty Cllr Kendall added:

"I would like to thank everyone in Brentwood South Division who voted for me and turned a 1,000 deficit into a Liberal Democrat win. Many people, realising how close it was, came out in the last hour to make sure their vote counted and, with a seven vote majority, it certainly did!"

"It makes it even more pertinent that these two Lib Dem gains are in the constituency of the Tory party chairman"

County Councillors Aspinell and Kendall would both like to extend their gratitude to the residents of Brentwood South and Brentwood North divisions for playing a part in this tremendous victory and, especially, for their votes.

Both county councillors are borough councillors for Pilgrims Hatch and will continue to serve at this level also.
