Severe weather: Lib Dem councillors seek answers

Severe weather conditions have to be dealt with as soon as warnings are given, not when the problems are already there

Liberal Democrat councillors are asking why Brentwood High Street's new pavements were not gritted prior to the much heralded snow storms at the weekend, especially as this was predicted to be the busiest shopping day of the year so far.

Cllr Karen Chilvers, who highlighted the problems back in February, said:

"I am very disappointed that our comments from earlier this year were not taken into account. The Tory administrations should have learnt a lesson from February's snow fall and prevented the situation on Saturday which has now resulted in a number of people, young and old, having quite nasty accidents".

"However, this is not surprising as the budget for gritting across the county last year was just over £2.5million whilst the Marketing and PR budget was £4.8million - the ninth highest spend in the country."

Cllr David Kendall, county councillor for Brentwood South, said:

"I am very concerned about the number of accidents that occurred and that the problems weren't dealt with proactively. I will be asking questions at County Council and trying to ensure that this is made a priority in future."
