No, David Cameron, we are not the same

Cllr David Kendall laughs off Cameron's claims

Parliamentary Spokesman Cllr David Kendall has again laughed off Conservative party claims that we are "almost the same". David Cameron has made this claim in his New Year message, similar to Eric Pickles claim that we were "all the same family" that was made during the Liberal Democrat conference.

Cllr Kendall said:

"Mr Cameron has very different policies to Nick Clegg's. A fairer Britain to the Lib Dems means tax cuts for those on the lowest wages but to the Tories it means tax breaks for millionaires."

"Back in September, when Eric Pickles tried to suggest we were all "one big family" I reminded voters of some facts that show clear blue water between our policies:

  • It was the Conservatives that opposed social welfare in 1909 and the creation of the NHS forty years later.
  • They opposed placing sanctions on racist South Africa under Margaret Thatcher and appeased ethnic cleansing in Bosnia under John Major.
  • The Tories' did oppose 42 days' detention - but they refused to back Lib Dem moves to reduce that to 14 days.
  • The Tories also tried to introduce ID cards under former leader Michael Howard and we fought against them for many years.

"David Cameron will say anything to ensure that he becomes Prime Minister, but the longer this parliament continues the more his star is beginning to wane.

"The Liberal Democrats are the only party who will put money into people's pockets with fair tax cuts, the only party to offer universal childcare and smaller classes in our primary schools, the only party who would create thousands of jobs by investing in homes, hospitals, schools and public transport to build the green economy of tomorrow."
