The Liberal Democrats have expressed their immense disappointment that rebates for the High Street retailers will not form part of the agenda for the council's inaugural Economic Development Panel on Monday. Cllr David Kendall requested this come to full council as an item of urgent business in December but withdrew the request after assurances from the Mayor that this would be discussed at the January meeting.

Cllr Kendall said:

"I feel this is something borough members should be able to discuss. Although the issue falls under the remit of the Valuation Office, members should still be given a full explanation of the process retailers need to follow in order that we can support them and that we can bring retailers issues to the chamber for a frank discussion."

"Retailers may be looking for us to fight for them on this issue and help them with their claims, so members need to be aware of all the facts. The borough council should be looking to provide contact points, advice and information to help the retailers with their claims.

I am very disappointed in the decision of the Tory Chairman, Cllr Phil Baker, who is the borough's economic champion.
